A Venue Transformation Case Study by
Chameleon Sand Candle Styling
Some venues tell you what they are the moment you walk in. The Naval Store does not. It is a blank canvas — a raw, industrial heritage space in the heart of Fremantle that holds no fixed identity of its own. What it becomes depends entirely on who is given the room to transform it. This is the story of one transformation. Not the only one possible. A demonstration of what this space can hold.
A Space Built to Hold Something Bigger Than Itself
Long before it held candlelight, The Naval Store held cargo. Built in 1935, the building was constructed to store and distribute supplies for naval vessels moving through Fremantle Port, during a period when the port itself held major wartime significance for Australia. A crest still on its facade reads Non Sibi Sed Patriae — not for self, but for homeland. Positioned at the foot of Cantonment Hill, at the entry point to Walyalup / Fremantle, the building has always marked a threshold — the moment the city begins. Steel frame. Exposed jarrah beams. Concrete floors. Soaring windows. Almost entirely untouched. For decades, the space served a function. Today, it serves an imagination. This is precisely what makes it valuable. A raw, unthemed, architecturally honest space does not compete with a vision — it holds it.
The Transformation: Cloud Dancer
To demonstrate what this space could become, Chameleon Sand Candle Styling created Cloud Dancer — a candlelit editorial installation inspired by Pantone's 2026 Colour of the Year, PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer, staged inside The Naval Store on 20 July 2026.
Hundreds of sand candles formed a glowing field across the concrete floor. Low fog softened the room until candlelight seemed to hang in cloud. Suspended draping turned exposed steel beams into something closer to sky. Bridal fashion, sculptural florals and live piano moved through the space as though it had always been built for exactly this.
The industrial architecture was not hidden to achieve this. It was used. The raw beams, concrete and light became the contrast that made the softness feel intentional rather than decorative.

Beyond This Installation
Cloud Dancer is one interpretation of The Naval Store. It will not be the last, and it is not the limit. The same architectural honesty that allowed this space to become a candlelit atmosphere of cloud and flame could just as easily hold: A black-tie gala built around dramatic lighting and scale.
A corporate showcase or product launch that uses the industrial backdrop as its own statement. An intimate wedding ceremony where the architecture does the talking and the styling does the rest. A brand activation designed around mood, colour and immersive design. What The Naval Store offers is not a look. It's room to build one.
The Take-Away
A blank canvas is only as valuable as what's created inside it.
Cloud Dancer exists as proof of concept - a demonstration of how far a raw, heritage industrial space can be pushed when design, atmosphere and intention are treated as seriously as the venue itself.
