Sustainability and Packaging

At Chameleon Sand Candle, sustainability is at the core of our mission. Our candle sand is RSPO-certified, fully biodegradable, and home-compostable, aligning with our commitment to responsible sourcing. Unlike traditional pillar candles that often end up as one-time-use items, our sand candles promote a sustainable approach with minimal sand usage per burn.

While we acknowledge that perfection is a journey, not a destination, we're actively pursuing even more eco-friendly solutions. The challenge of finding cost-effective options is real for small businesses, but we're on a mission—not just to transform the way society perceives and uses candles but to do so sustainably, considering both environmental impact and human health.

We are consistently using the method of the 3 R’s to achieve continuous improvement: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Packaging

CHAMELEON SAND CANDLE TUBE

Tube: cardboard, FSC-certified and biodegradable

The cardboard we use is FSC MIX: The product is made with a mixture of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC-controlled wood. While controlled wood doesn’t come from FSC-certified forests, it mitigates the risk of the material originating from unacceptable sources. Read more: https://fsc.org/en/what-the-fsc-labels-mean

What you can do with it?

1. Remove the lids.
2. Keep the cap and lids and use them as a box for wicks or a secret stash of lollies.
3. Transform the tube into an Acoustic Enhancer (Pro Tip: take the whole tube with you when you go camping, and use the sand candle to create an atmosphere and tube for enhancing those tunes from your mobile phone. See how to do it HERE).
4. When you no longer need the tube, then remove the plastic part from inside the tube.
5. Put the tube and cap into your recycling bin OR compost it and make new soil to put some of our plantable cards into it and grow amazing daisies.

See-through window: PVC

Over 20 million tons of PVC is produced every year worldwide, and while it is a useful material
disposing of it can be tricky. Because of the chemical composition of PVC incinerating it or leaving it in landfills can be dangerous and terrible for the environment.

The good news is, that because of the dangers of PVC disposal, PVC recycling has actually become one of the most advanced processes in the mechanical recycling world.

This is how PVC is recycled:
‱PVC is ground down into a clean ‘regrind’ plastic.
‱PVC is recycled into a plastic powder.
‱PVC is shaped into plastic pellets for reuse.

Most PVC can be recycled up to 6 or 7 times and with a product life of 100 years, recycled PVC has the potential to last up to 600 years! Read more: https://cleanriver.com/blog-can-pvc-be-recycled/

Planet Ark has developed a really user-friendly app to bring much of this information right to your fingertips. It’s called Recyclesmart.

What you can do with it?

1. Remove the plastic part from inside the tube.
2. Put it into the recycling bin (contact your local council to confirm as different councils may have different requirements).

Health considerations

The use of volatile organic compounds in the manufacturing process of vinyl can actually fill your home with dangerous fumes and odors. Called outgassing, these fumes are emitted from vinyl over time and are just one cause of indoor pollutants. Indoor pollutants inside the home are likely to be five times higher than levels found outside, according to studies conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency.

This process is outgassing - also called offgassing - and can cause a wide array of health complications including headaches, fatigue and nausea. Offgassing is a common process and occurs in a wide array of common household items including furniture, carpet, clothing, flooring and wood products.

At Chameleon Sand Candle, after we receive the tubes from the manufacturer, we store them in a well-ventilated area or when possible leave them outside in a covered area for several days to a few weeks to allow the outgas process to occur, before shipping them to you.

Silver lids (on both ends of the tube): stainless steel

Stainless steel is a champion of recycling. It is one of the key contributors stainless steel makes to sustainability. With its long service life and 100% recyclability, has become an excellent environmental performer.

Not only is it suitable for the recycling process, but it also has a high value, meaning that the recycling process is economically viable.

The stainless steel recycling process is relatively simple as it is so common to use recycled stainless steel in the production of new products.

Aside from recyclability one of the biggest environmental selling points for stainless steel has to be its longevity.

What you can do with it?

1. Remove lids.
2. Keep the cap and lids and use them as a box for wicks or a secret stash of lollies.
3. When you no longer need the box, put it into the recycling bin (contact your local council to confirm as different councils may have different requirements).

Ink: soy ink

The ink used for printing is soy ink. Soy-based ink is renewable and made from plants—and it also creates more vibrant colors than the alternative. Traditional ink is based on finite petroleum-based resources, while soy-based ink is made from soybean oil, which, as a plant product, is naturally renewable.

Like most bio-based products—goods that are wholly or mostly derived from biological materials—the carbon footprint of soy ink is lower compared to that made with petroleum. Aside from being renewable and having a low carbon footprint, petroleum-based inks produce more volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while they dry. Read more: https://www.popsci.com/environment/soy-based-ink-environment-sustainability/

Wicks:
‱Wicks are placed loosely inside the cap, and no plastic bags are used
‱We use cotton wicks that are lead-free and coated with our unique blend.

Stickers:
  ‱Made from 100% recycled paper
  ‱Water-soluble eco-friendly adhesive
  ‱FSC Certified

CHAMELEON SAND CANDLE
3KG, 6KG, 9KG BUCKETS

Our buckets and lids are made of two types of plastic:
â€ąLow-density polyethylene (LDPE) #4 - as a hard plastic, it can be recycled.
â€ąPolypropylene (PP) #5 - these items are a rigid/hard plastic and can be recycled.

This process is outgassing -- also called offgassing -- and can cause a wide array of health complications including headaches, fatigue and nausea.

Silver lids (on both ends of the tube) - stainless steel

CHAMELEON SAND CANDLE 3KG, 6KG, 9KG BUCKETS

Our buckets and lids are made of two types of plastic:
â€ąLow-density polyethylene (LDPE) #4 - as a hard plastic, it can be recycled.
‱Polypropylene (PP) #5 - these items are a rigid/hard plastic and can be recycled.

Other ways we are helping to make a difference

‱We don’t include paper invoices as standard, as all invoices and receipts are sent via email.
‱Our delivery boxes are made from 100% recycled material.
‱Void fill: we use newspaper wraps that are made from recycled resources (made of 30% recycled newswrap) or honeycomb paper, that is recyclable, renewable and biodegradable.
‱We're using paper tapes:
-This tape is recyclable when attached to cardboard.
-The forestry content of this product has been sourced from an FSC-certified supplier, supporting healthy forests and protecting wildlife.
‱We're using 100% fully recyclable mailers.
‱We have stopped sending printed Thank-You-Cards and send electronic cards instead.
‱We have moved away from printed flyers that we used to send with orders. You get all the juice you need via email.
‱We are phasing out small plastic bags used to hold the wicks and replacing them with 100% biodegradable kraft paper bags.
‱When we ship anything between our warehouses, we re-use the shipping boxes and void fill over and over again.
‱We use any damaged boxes to build cubby houses for ourselves, seriously! :D

CHAMELEON SAND CANDLE TUBE

‱ Tube: cardboard, FSC-certified and biodegradable

‱ See through window: PVC

Over 20 million tons of PVC is produced every year worldwide, and while it is a useful material
disposing of it can be tricky. Because of the chemical composition of PVC incinerating it or leaving it in landfills can be dangerous and terrible for the environment.

The good news is, that because of the dangers of PVC disposal, PVC recycling has actually become one of the most advanced processes in the mechanical recycling world.

This is how PVC is recycled:

- PVC is ground down into a clean ‘regrind’ plastic.
- PVC is recycled into a plastic powder.
- PVC is shaped into plastic pellets for reuse.

Chameleon Sand Candle Pearled Candle

4. Relighting & refreshing the candle

If you wish to relight the candle, first check the length of the remaining wick by lifting the set wax out the candle sand.

If there is no wick left or if you want to freshen up the candle's appearance, disgard the solid wax and insert a new wick.

If there is still some wick left, you have two options: you can either place the solid wax back into the sand as it is or break the sides of the set wax and put it back into the sand. For a cleaner look, insert the set wax into the sand upside down.

Using essential oils

Chameleon Sand Candle is fragrance-free, however, you can use essential oils to create a gentle aroma. Just add a few drops of your preferred essential oil around the wick before lighting the candle.

It's important to remember not to add essential oils while the candle is already burning.

Please keep in mind that using essential oils differs from using artificially scented candles. The scent will be more delicate and natural.

Safety

Chameleon Sand Candle offers a higher level of safety compared to regular candles. Chameleon candle self-extinguishes when tipped over, minimizing the risk of accidents and potential fire hazards.

Additionally, the candle is designed to self-extinguish once the wick burns out, providing an added layer of reassurance.

With Chameleon Sand Candle, you can enjoy the warm glow and calming ambiance without worrying about potential dangers.

Kinder to Earth: FSC-certified and biodegradable

At Chameleon Sand Candle, we prioritize responsible sourcing and sustainability. Our candle sand is RSPO-certified, fully biodegradable, and home-compostable.

Only very little sand gets used with every burn, making it very sustainable (unlike normal pillar candles that mostly get used only once in events).

Our new innovative Chameleon Sand Candle's tubes have FSC-certified and biodegradable packaging and we have used plant-based inks.

Our dedication to sustainability extends to our wholesale packaging. While our current packaging is recyclable, we're actively working towards even more eco-friendly solutions.

We are consistently using the method of the 3 R’s to achieve continuous improvement: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
